The Beacon Case for iPad2 had a reputation that preceded its arrival. I knew that it was entirely made in the USA. I knew that the outside cover was handcrafted by a family-run bookbindery in outside Chicago. I knew that the interior featured a unique design, carefully constructed of cherry and birch to hold the iPad firmly without rubber bumpers to wear out. I had heard that all of the openings were perfectly positioned and that every detail had been attended to, including a hidden magnet to wake the iPad upon opening. I knew that the birch frame was constructed by cabinet makers in South Carolina and then sent to the designers of Beacon Case in North Carolina where they hand finished, assembled and tested every case. And finally, I was aware that $5 would be donated for each case sold to fund clean water projects around the world.
This all sounded like the kind of product USA Love List loves to love but it is also the kind of product that I couldn't fully appreciate until I was holding it in my hand. There is something odd about encasing the sleekness of an iPad in materials like wood and leather, but every bit of the case was so carefully crafted and smoothly finished that the tablet instantly settled in and the hinged side panel securely snapped shut. The cover wrapped around and closed simply and cleanly, secured with an elastic band. The cover can be flipped open and used as a stand in multiple positions, but the case is otherwise devoid of gadgets, bells or whistles, in favor of clean lines.
I showed it to some mom-friends who were not convinced it was cushy enough for marauding toddlers and it lacked attachments to mount it as a video player in the car. However, anyone who used their iPad in an office environment, men especially, seemed to not want to put the case down. Those participating in the review reported big reactions when walking into meetings with what appeared at first glance to be a leather bound book which then flipped open to reveal the carefully crafted woodwork concealing the iPad. Indeed, the layers of wood around the edges are reminiscent of the rough page edges of treasured volumes. Old and new materials, built by hand in three states, making a difference around the world, keeping iPads safe...
