To be labeled as such, “’Made in USA’ means that ‘all or virtually all”’ the product has been made in America. That is, all significant parts, processing, and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Products should not contain any — or only negligible — foreign content.”
Unfortunately, many companies claim their products are made in the USA when they’re either built or assembled in the USA, meaning these companies source materials from outside America and have them shipped here.
While USA Love List strives to support manufacturers who comply with “all or virtually all” its components sourced and made in America, we sometimes do include American manufacturers who source outside the USA but employ hardworking Americans at domestic facilities. We also distinguish, as much as possible, between those who comply with the FTC in its description, and those who go offshore for its materials. This hands-on company staffs its manufacturing facility by locals and endeavors to source its materials from other American companies whenever possible. This company confirms via email that seat its covers are hand sewn in South Carolina. The seat frames are bent by hand and powder coated in Georgia. The shock cord comes from Bluewater Rope, which is local to the company. And there are more materials besides these that are made stateside! Crescent Kayaks offer eight different kayaks, each with varying options and made from Aquatuf® resin. One selection, the Crew, has a patented hull design with a nose that provides extra buoyancy. Jackson Kayak
Jackson Kayak makes its kayaks in Sparta, Tennessee, from both USA and global materials. The company continues to be family-owned and operated, and employs workers locally. This brand produces a variety of kayaks, including recreational, fishing, touring, and whitewater kayaks, currently offering around two dozen kayaks that adapt to your preferred environment. Jackson Kayak offers three selections in its pedal kayak line, including the Bite FD, shown. This fishing kayak offers good stabilization, comfortable seating, good space for equipment, and more. The Jackson Kayak brand also offers its own upgraded pedal system, the Flex Drive Mark IV, available for many of its kayaks.
Lifetime Kayaks
Lifetime Kayaks is a division of Lifetime Products. While this company makes products throughout the world, its website says it makes kayaks in Utah. However, I found on the Lifetime website that those made in the USA feature a U.S. flag logo with the statement, “Made in the USA from U.S. & imported parts.” Lifetime kayaks are made of high-density polyethylene plastic through a process called blow-molding; some other kayak manufacturers claim there are better methods to make much more durable plastic kayaks, this particular method keeps Lifetime Kayaks at a lower price point. These are recreational kayaks and don’t offer many features, but it’s a great way to test out your interest level. All Lifetime kayaks come with a five-year limited warranty. Shown is the Tamarack 100 Sit-on-Top kayak that’s sold with a paddle.
Long Haul Folding Kayaks
Long Haul Folding Kayaks are handmade in the USA, specifically in Colorado. Master boat builder and owner Mark Eckhart developed his kayak and canoe designs after more than three decades of using, repairing, and manufacturing kayaks. He came up with a better way to build a portable, durable, folding kayak using lightweight but sturdy ash and birch wood. Choose either in-stock kayaks or kayaks made to your exact specifications. Shown is the A1 Expedition hull with lifeline, bow and stern oval hatches, paddle tie downs and stroke guards. Old Town Watercraft
Old Town Watercraft, located in Old Town, Maine, has been in business since 1898 when it was called Old Town Canoes. Old Town Watercraft confirmed via email that it indeed makes its kayaks in Old Town. “Some parts are sourced from overseas. But the majority are sourced right here in the USA.” Old Town walks you through a questionnaire on its website to help you choose the ideal kayak for your interests, whether it’s for fishing, recreational use, type of propulsion, and more. For example, if you’re looking for an ocean kayak, check out the Castine 140. It’s available in three sizes and even is rudder-ready (sold separately). Solo Skiff
After many years of being in the skiff business, Tom Mitzlaff founded, designed, and made the Solo Skiff . The Solo Skiff is an all-in-one motorized fishing kayak made at an affordable price in the USA, specifically in Florida. This 41-inch wide kayak has a built-in cooler, grab bar, and a transom that allows easy attachment of your motor (up to 5 horsepower), sold separately. It only fits one person at a time, and it has a weight capacity of 400 pounds. Choose from three different colors. Check out the dealer page on the Solo Skiff website for a retailer near you. Mitzlaff certainly embodies the made-in-the-USA spirit. During our conversations, he was very transparent about his product and willing to answer any of my questions. He specifically outlined that less than .03% of his product comes from somewhere other than the USA.
