What a fabulous product name… Big Ass Fans… perfectly descriptive and it probably made you smile.  It made me smile! The folks at Big Ass Fans in Lexington, Kentucky have been smiling a whole lot more since they changed the name of their brand from HVLS Fan Co.  The change was made in response to their customers, insisted brand manager Alex Reed (still smiling, I'm sure) because everyone constantly just referred to them as the company that makes those “Big Ass Fans”.  So they made the change, adopted a clever little donkey logo (based on a real donkey named Fanny), and have been drawing attention ever since. They were recently named by Inc. magazine as one of the fastest growing companies in the country.

As you may have surmised, Big Ass Fans designs, manufactures, and sells the world's largest overhead fans. They started with warehouse and manufacturing installations. Then, moved into other large, high-ceiling environments like athletic facilities and big-box stores. Their customers have come to realize that keeping air moving and temperate is much more green and energy effective than trying to chill large spaces with air-conditioning.  It wasn't long before they expanded into the residential market. Newer homes often had large multi-story great rooms and indoor-outdoor spaces that were hard to keep cozy.

Big Ass Fans – Made in USA

Big Ass Fans are made at their company headquarters in Kentucky. They are proud of their Lexington manufacturing facility for two reasons.  First, their central location keeps them within driving distance of all of their major suppliers which allows them to maintain the close relationships needed to update and innovate. Second, the owner of the company is a big supporter of the state's university system and the access to local talent it provides.  More information can be found at their website: http://www.bigassfans.com.

Many “fans” of Big Ass Fans don't have room for one of their large fans but want to support this American-made company (or more likely that name just cracks them up), so they snap up tens of thousands of Big Ass Fans hats, shirts, and the like every year.   They report that the companies supplying the gear are American companies but they are not certain of the origin of each item. However, all of the proceeds from their briskly selling gear go to a Colorado shelter for abused and neglected donkeys.
