If you’re concerned about harmful chemicals existing in your food storage receptacles, look for the best non toxic food storage containers made in the USA. American-made prioritizes safety in its manufacturing of these products as they avoid toxic chemicals.
American Made Non Toxic Food Storage Containers
A quick Internet search on food storage shows a multitude of choices available to you, the consumer. As you review your options, you’ll find, not-so-surprisingly, a vast majority of the containers made overseas look exactly like their USA-made counterparts. It’s easy to assume if the containers might look the same, they must be the same.
Not so. Many of the countries making our food storage containers have less strict regulations on the materials used than the United States. They take shortcuts and use cheaper substances that might be toxic and leach these toxins into the food. When we ingest the food, we’re also ingesting these harmful substances.
Your health is worth so much more than saving a few extra dollars on food storage. Opt instead to buy USA made food containers.
They go well beyond a single use with some never wearing out. Replace your single-use containers, food storage bags, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap with our top recommendations. They’re the best option for storing food and staying out of our landfills.
They also double as meal prep containers. They make meal planning much easier when you can cut vegetables, marinate meat, and prepare other food items ahead of time.
Simply put, USA made is the best choice for food storage and provides safer options over containers made elsewhere. They give you peace of mind as you consider the health of your family. It's one of the best ways to cut down on food waste.
What To Look For in Non-Toxic Food Storage Containers
While glass continues to be the best option for food storage, don’t be afraid to shop for USA-made plastic and silicone food storage.
Safe, Non-Toxic Glass
Glass containers made in the USA don’t contain phthalates or bisphenol-A (BPA). They also are free from cadmium, lead, and other heavy metals. Choose containers made from soda-lime glass or Borosilicate glass. Glass is non-porous, which makes it the safest choice for hot food or cold. Even though it’s heavier to transport and may not be the best for kids’ lunches, most, if not all, of our glass selections can go from freezer to microwave to dishwasher. And while glass obviously can break, food storage glass is tempered to resist breaking or shattering.
Another good option is plastic. Not all plastics are the same, but the plastic storage containers made in the USA are BPA-free and safe for your food and family. Some research shows BPA is connected to serious health issues, especially in children. The plastic food storage holders we recommend are free from BPA. We also found a safe recycled plastic option.
Both glass and plastic choices come in a variety of sizes, different shapes, and many feature locking lids.
Consider USA-made silicone food storage containers. They’re free of BPA, lead, phthalates, and PVC. Another nice thing about these containers is they zip, meaning you don’t have to search for lids! They potentially can be used thousands of times, which will reduce waste. Choose an appropriate size to use as a lunch bag for your kids. Young kids of pre-school age can carry their snacks in these as well.
Non-Toxic, Safe Food Wraps
Finally, you’ll find nontoxic food wraps made in the USA. These reusable food wraps are made with organic cotton and a blend of beeswax with other safe, natural materials. You can buy different sizes for different uses. They’re great for wrapping sandwiches or fruit in for school lunches.
All four materials made in the USA—glass, plastic, silicone, and wraps—are also sustainable options because they can be recycled.
Ceramic and stainless steel containers make for good non-toxic food storage, but sadly, we couldn’t find any of these products made in the USA.

About The Lids
Sadly, some of the lids for our USA-made containers come from overseas. We could find no bamboo lids made on American soil. While we still recommend some of the glass and plastic containers, proceed with caution when you reheat foods and use the lids made elsewhere.
A Note About Tupperware
Tupperware and its “burping” lids hit the market back in 1946. It remains a popular go-to brand for storing foods. We reached out to the company, requesting it specify which of its products are made in the USA, and Tupperware said this: “Unfortunately, we don't have specific information about where each item has been made, please note Tupperware has manufacturing plants in Belgium, Brazil, France, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, and the United States, and leases manufacturing and distribution facilities in China, India, and Venezuela.”
How to Care for Your American-Made Non-Toxic Food Storage Containers
Regardless of the material your containers are made from, be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions on how to care for them. Most, if not all, of the products we list, are dishwasher-safe, including silicone storage bags. Some of the products can stain if you store tomato sauce in them. You can remove these stains simply by treating them with water and baking soda paste.
