Patagonia is a global apparel company that is popular with outdoor recreation enthusiasts. If you are a hiker, mountain climber, or even into surfing, then you have probably heard of them. Patagonia clothing can be found all over the US in stores like REI and DICK's Sporting Goods, as well as in Patagonia's own retail stores. Over the years, many readers have asked us, “Where is Patagonia made?”. Here is our answer.

Is Patagonia Clothing Made in USA?

Patagonia was founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, an accomplished rock climber. The company started in California, where it is still headquartered today.

Patagonia does not own any of its own factories or mills, so all of its manufacturing is outsourced to facilities world-wide. Over the years the quantity of Patagonia products with ‘Made in USA' has dwindled drastically. Patagonia coats, jackets, shirts, pants and other clothing items are not made in the USA. As they explain on their website, many of the factories in the states that they worked with have closed.

We did, however, discover that Patagonia does work with the following factories in the USA to source fabric and other clothing notions.

  • Latham, New York- PermaLoft Inc for outerwear and insulation textiles
  • Lawrence, Massachusetts- Polartec, LLC for baselayer, insulation, and outerwear & sportswear textiles
  • Elkton, Maryland- W.L. Gore & Associates, INC for outerwear fabric
  • Mason, Ohio- Downlite for white duck and white goose down

We also found that Patagonia works with Nester Hosiery in Mount Airy, North Carolina for the manufacturing of most of their socks.

Patagonia clothing made in USA is impossible to find, but we have compiled a list of American made clothing alternatives.
